When was the last time you were genuinely frustrated about missing a target?
Not mildly disappointed.
Not “we’ll get it next time”.
I mean properly fired up.
The kind of energy that makes you sit up & say:
“This isn’t good enough. We need to fix it.”
Because here’s the truth most leadership teams avoid.
Missed numbers matter.
Missed revenue matters.
Rocks® consistently below completion targets matter.
Profit being off track matters.
Not because of perfection.
Because of standards.
The Quiet Slide Into Mediocrity
It rarely starts dramatically.
It starts small.
A missed Rock® that gets brushed off.
A number that’s slightly off, but “close enough”.
A conversation that never quite happens.
Then it happens again.
And again.
Before long, something shifts.
The expectation drops. The urgency fades.
And “good enough” quietly becomes the standard.
That’s how culture changes.
Not through big decisions.
Through what leaders tolerate.
What You’re Really Teaching Your Team
Every time a missed target is shrugged off, your team is learning something.
They’re learning that:
- Deadlines are flexible
- Numbers are optional
- Accountability is negotiable
You may not say it out loud.
But your behaviour makes it clear.
And once that standard is set, it’s very hard to reverse.
Why I Won’t Let It Slide
I didn’t become a Certified EOS Implementer® to run comfortable meetings.
I’m not there to simply nod, smile & keep things easy.
I’m there to help leadership teams gain clarity, accountability & traction®.
And that means:
- Calling out when the numbers are off
- Digging past surface-level excuses
- Asking whether you truly want the result you say you want
Support doesn’t mean making people feel better about missing targets.
It means helping leadership teams raise the standard & solve the real issues.
The Complacency Trap
Complacency is one of the biggest risks in any growing business.
And it’s subtle.
First, it’s one missed Rock®.
Then completion targets start becoming optional.
Then profit is slightly off, but acceptable.
Until eventually, the business is underperforming… & no one is quite sure when it started.
Jim Collins said it perfectly:
“Mediocrity stems from chronic inconsistency.”
And he’s right.
Great businesses aren’t built on occasional wins.
They’re built on consistent execution.
This Isn’t About Perfection
Let’s be clear.
This isn’t about being perfect.
Things will go off track. Markets shift. People make mistakes.
That’s part of business.
But what matters is how you respond.
Do you shrug & move on?
Or do you stop, get curious & solve the issue properly?
What High-Performing Leadership Teams Do Differently
The best leadership teams don’t ignore missed numbers.
They lean into them.
They:
- Call them out
- Put them on the Issues List™
- IDS® them properly
- Solve the root cause
No blame. No drama. Just clarity & action.
That’s where real traction® comes from.
Bring Energy Into the Room
So next time you miss a number…
Don’t shrug. Don’t justify it. Don’t smooth it over.
Get uncomfortable.
Let it matter.
Bring energy into the room.
Then do the work.
Because systems, tools & processes only create results when leadership teams consistently commit to the discipline required to execute well.
And your team will only take accountability seriously if leadership does first.
Final Thought
If your business feels like it’s drifting, it’s rarely because of one big failure.
It’s because small misses have been tolerated for too long.
Raise the bar.
Hold the line.
And fix what matters.
That’s how great businesses are built.
